Can another healthcare professional help?

Do you need to see the GP?

Sometimes the GP is not the most appropriate healthcare professional to deal with your ailment. Please see the information on see a doctor or healthcare professional, which might help you decide whether a GP appointment is truly necessary or whether it might be better for you to see a pharmacist, optician, dentist, or other healthcare professional. You can even self-refer for some services without seeing your GP.

Your appointment at the Practice

Consultations with your doctor are by appointment and can be made in a number of ways. If you are unable to access the online system please contact the surgery on 0345 337 1160 and one of our admin team will assist you.

Doctor & Nurse Appointments
  • An appointment where both the doctor and nurse see you together
  • Useful for intimate examinations which need a chaperone, or where 2 pairs of hands are needed eg coil insertion, minor surgery.
Emergencies

Every day some appointments are reserved for emergencies.  Requests from patients who need to be seen urgently are assessed by a duty doctor. Please telephone the surgery before 10:00am if possible if you need to be seen the same day.

Evening Surgeries

There are evening surgeries once a week rotating between a Monday and a Wednesday. These surgeries are provided in an effort to improve our service to the working/commuting section of the population of Stonehaven. If you are in this category and require an evening appointment please contact reception or telephone 0345 337 1160 and select option 2. These appointments can be booked in advance.

Please note chaperones for intimate examinations are usually not available in the evenings so if you require an intimate examination, an appointment during the day may be more appropriate.

Nurse Appointments

Nurses are on duty each weekday until 17:00 and patients are seen by appointment. They will be able to help you with immunisations, dressings, removal of stitches, minor injuries, ECGs and blood tests etc. Our practice nurses can also be contacted by telephoning the surgery on 0345 337 1160 and leaving a message with the receptionist. A nurse will return your call when available.

The Duty Doctor triages telephone calls for patients requiring urgent medical advice. Non-urgent requests for advice are passed to the appropriate GP, who will return your telephone call when available.

Additional information

Consultations 16 to 75

If a patient aged between 16 and 75 years has not had a practice consultation within a period of three years, we are happy, on request, to provide a consultation.

Giving Consent for Treatment

You have the right to accept or refuse treatment that is offered to you, and not to be given any physical examination or treatment unless you have given valid consent. If you do not have the capacity to do so, consent must be obtained from a person legally able to act on your behalf, or the treatment must be in your best interests.

Your valid consent (agreement to the course of action) is needed for the treatment that’s offered to you before any physical examinations or treatment can be given. If you haven’t given your consent, you can accept or refuse treatment that’s offered to you.

It’s important to be involved in decisions about your treatment and to be given information to help you choose the right treatment. When making treatment choices, you’ll often discuss the options with your doctor or another healthcare professional.

If you have a suspected infectious disease

Please inform reception if you suspect an infectious disease, as this will enable us to deal with it appropriately during your visit to protect you, other patients and staff.

Language Difficulties and Chaperones

We do have access to an interpretation service from Grampian Health Board for patients who have difficulty communicating in English. Patients are also welcome to bring a chaperone with them for any intimate examination.
